FIELD MEET

…Ringmaster J.R. Miller pulled off a FUN motorcycle field meet at this years 27th Temple "All
Harley" Party Drags Saturday afternoon after conclusion of the dragstrip action. Held each year
in the Events Area, J.R.’s quick wit and likeable manner kept the crowd amused and the
contestants laughing as they played with their motorcycles in several low speed games of riding
skill.
…This year’s Slo Race came down to 2 guys that were more than good at seeing who could be
the LAST bike across the finish line. Boots & Mr. Chuck lined up and looked as serious as the Top
Fuel Finalsists in Sunday’s Drag Racin’. The crowd hooted and hollared as they wobbled down
the lanes, having to keep upright and not putting their foot down. Mr. Chuck took the 1st place
trophy sponsored by Texas Proud Custom Cycles and Boots took 2nd place gold also from the
chopper shop in nearby Killeen.
…In the spegetti drop competition, (I’m using Dave Erdenberger’s spelling of spegetti here as I
don’t really know how to do it myself and he’s handy to blame the misspelling on) there were
several entrants. The game consisted of weaving in and out of some cones while the person
riding passenger takes straight uncooked spegetti and puts a stick in a bottle on each cone, then
picks ‘em up on the way out. It’s really harder to do than it is to write about it and it’s kinda hard
to write about - specially if you can’t spell spegetti.
…THIS boiled down to them two crafty field meet veterans Boots & Mr. Chuck with Boots and his
accomplace Crystal again edging out Boots and his lovely teammate.
…As the sky opened up to accasional "sprinkles" J.R. called for the crowd’s all time favorite -
THE WEENIE BITE. This little game is really innocent fun that just happened to get a "bad rap". It
consists of the rider slowly riding between 2 poles whose crossbar has a string with a hot dog
weenie on the end of it. The object being the passenger of the bike trys to bite as much of the
hot dog as she can as the bike passes under it. The hot dog is always covered in mustard and
J.R. measures the attenpts in "inches swallowed".
…Jerry & Jody came in 2nd but Boots & Crystal took another well deserved win.
…Right after that J.R. called up, "The Old Lady Push Race" where the women passengers set on
and guided the non running motorcycles as the guys pushed them across the starting line and
somehow Boots & Crystal took another win..
…The Grand Finale of the Field Meet was the BOOT RACE. As the excitement built, J.R and his
helper Dave gathered a boot from each contestant that went into a box at the end of the Event
Area. Then at "GO" the contestants ran the length of the Event Area, got their boot, ran back and
pushed their bike across the Finish Line…. Bandido Tommy 2 - Tone took the win to the loud
cheers of the crowd with Johnny taking 2nd place.
…Lots of YE’ Ha’s were heard at the Field Meet and the crowd pretty well stuck around into the
evening as local hot rock band Crash Landing played late into the evening after a little sprinkle..

BIKE SHOW

…Saturday afternoon as the Time Trials and Pro Qualifying was going on down Little River
Dragway’s 1/8th mile, the Event’s Area was filling up with what turned out to be a PRETTY GOOD
BIKE SHOW. Run by Bad To The Bone Motorcycle’s - "Maddog" Phillip and his better half
Theresa, the Cold Spring motorcycle shop owners classified and judged a "nice" group of
scooters in the Events Area.
…Randy Moore’s ‘64 Triumph with 10,000 miles on it a definate old school scooter took 2nd place
in Vintage while Sonny Ara from China Springs took 1st with his 69 FLH. The generator
shovelhead took him 2 years to build and has been together now for 6 years.
…Mark Stephenson took 2nd place in the Stock Class with his 1968 Harley put together by Trinity
Frames’ Steve Triplett. The Cedar Creek Texas bike took 2 years to complete starting from a
Mexican Police recovery deal. First Place in Stock Class went to Chuck L. from Gatesville. (Yea I
know "Chuck L from Gatesville" sounds like something that would have a blacked out picture
alongside it of a nekkiid guy in black socks BUT I couldn’t read the guy’s handwriting and
decided to do it that way.. SORRY - print better next time!!) "Chuck won with his 1997 Heritage
Springer Softtail with about 5000 miles on the ultra clean scooter.
…Modified Stock Class 2nd Place was won by Scott Furman out of Waco. He did his own paint
which now has 7500 miles on it and still looked GREAT. Shane Flores took the big trophy back to
Conroe with his 2003 model scooter with paint by Storm Customs. His 1959 Caddilac taillights
molded into the back fender was a BIG hit with the crowd that seen the show competition.
…In Foreign Custom, Show lookers got a "Blast from the Past" with Jay Leach’s ‘74 Honda
Chopper. It took 2nd place gold back to Georgetown as Holland local Robert Haverland won 1st
with his "one off" Chopper Bobber.
…In the always popular Antique Class, Marc Daunis’ beautiful ‘64 XLCH Sportster brought back a
bunch of memories to the folks at Little River. Marc put the bike back into shape at home by
himself and his family with the only new things being bought were pistons & rings. Wisely a
much safer 900 Kawasaki front fork was installed on the bike for ridability in the 3 year project.
Robert Haverland took 1st place with his other bike.
…Best of Show is an overall award with a lot of disgression given to the judge as to his own
personal taste. Maddog Phillip has been in the motorcycle business for "quite a few" years now
and his services at his small family run motorcycle shop just east of Huntsville are highly sought
after and his advice there carries a minimum charge. So when a man like that who probably
bleeds black and orange blood gives a person a trophy for having the BEST BIKE IN THE SHOW
it’s a trophy to treasure. Gary Holcomb took the trophy back to Terrell with him with what was
discribed as "One of the biggest smiles of the WEEKEND" on his face.
…Gary’s 2009 Harley Road Glide was fitted out with a 103" motor with a clean diamond cut head
and cylinder job. It was finished off with PM wheels - a nifty 21" with a matching fender on the
front and then a 200mm rear cleaned up the back. Quite the Piece!!!
….Quite the Show… Right in the middle of the Track Action.. And It’ll Happen Again Next Year !!

The Field Meet and Bike Show Kept them busy at the Party Drags.....
